Happy Healthy Cat Month

Keeping your cat both happy and healthy provides a higher quality of life and allows you to better monitor their behavior if something appears off. So, what can you do to help keep them at 100%? Every cat is different, just like people, and what works for one cat may not work for another. Here are a couple of tips that you can use to keep your cat happy and healthy year round:

Give it Space

Cats are known for claiming their own spot in small spaces (think cardboard box!), but just as you need some personal space in your domain, your cat also needs their own area to roam and play. If possible, dedicate a small area of your living quarters so your cat has enough room for some toys, their scratching/climbing post and somewhere to sleep away from the hustle and bustle. Your cat will enjoy the space and feel as though they can settle into their own groove within the household. Plus, it also gives you a dedicated space in your home for you to enjoy your cat and (if they let you!), join them in their play!

Add Some Toys

Of course to go along with the space they have, your cat should have something to play with. Whether it is something they can use to entertain themselves on their own (toilet paper rolls, catnip stuffies etc), or one where you can engage with them (ribbons, laser pointers, feathers etc), get them a couple of toys. Keeping your cat active and stimulated is great for their health and overall mood – especially if they are indoor cats! Just be sure they won’t try to eat or swallow any smaller parts…

High Quality Diet

Fuelling your feline with high quality food will nourish their body and mind, helping to keep them happy and healthy! Think about the times you eat a bit more junk food than you should, you can feel it can’t you? The same can be said about your cat. If you aren’t sure what to feed your cat, check with your veterinarian and they will be able to suggest a diet specific to your cat’s individual needs.

Bonding Time

Instilling the relationship between you and your cat will do wonders for its health. Although typically thought to be more solitary creatures, your cat often seeks out companionship from you, and building and strengthening that bond makes them feel loved and accepted. Just as humans, animals crave this type of companionship and truly value it, so take some time to squeeze in a few moments of cuddle, chin scratches, belly rubs, or play – even if it is on THEIR terms!
